Searching for a general insurance agency near you? Agent, broker or app - what each actually does
A general insurance agency, a broker and a comparison app can all sell you the same motor or health policy. They differ in who they work for and what happens when you claim - which is also when being nearby matters.

"General insurance" is everything that is not life insurance: motor, health, home, travel, and all commercial cover - property, marine, liability, employee benefits. When you search for a general insurance agency near you, three quite different kinds of business answer. They can sell you the identical policy. They are not the same thing.
The three routes
| Agent | Broker | Online aggregator | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acts for | The insurer | You | Shows you options; you choose |
| Insurers offered | Only those that appointed the agent | Any insurer | Those listed on the platform |
| Advice | On the appointing insurer's products | Across the market, on your risk | Mostly self-service |
| Claims help | Varies by agent | Part of the job | Usually a helpline |
| Commercial risks | Limited | Yes - property, marine, liability, project | Rarely |
All three are licensed by IRDAI. None is wrong. The right one depends on how much the policy has to do for you.
When an app is enough
A two-wheeler third-party renewal, or a standard car renewal with no claims and no changes, is a price comparison. An aggregator does that well. So does a broker, but you do not need to visit anyone.
When you want someone near you
Distance stops mattering at the point of sale and starts mattering at the point of loss:
- A motor accident. The claim runs through a surveyor at the garage. Someone local who knows the workshop and the insurer's surveyor shortens it.
- A parent's hospital admission. Cashless pre-authorisation has a one-hour deadline, and elderly policyholders often need someone who will make the calls for them. We cover the timelines in the cashless claim guide.
- Anything commercial. A factory, a warehouse or a construction site is inspected before it is insured and surveyed after a loss. That is local work.
How to check a "near me" result is real
A map listing is easy to create. Before you share documents or pay premium:
- Ask for the IRDAI registration number and look it up on IRDAI's website. The name and address should match the listing.
- Check that the address is an office, with published working hours, not just a phone number.
- Pay premium only to the insurer or the intermediary's business account, never to a person.
